CLIPPERS BASEBALL CLUB MEETING
Monday, April 2, 2018
Opening:
Clipper Baseball Club meeting was held on Monday, April 2, 2018 at the library in Clear Creek Amana High School in Tiffin, IA at 6:19pm.
Club Members Present: Adam Henderson (President), Darci Roehler (Director of Operations and Interim Treasurer), Golda Monohon (Secretary), Wade Good (Alternate), and Sara Morlan
CCA Baseball Club Board Openings:
Reggie Meade resigned as CCABC board treasurer. Darci will resume his responsibilities until a new treasurer is voted in.
Nick Pfeiffer (8U white head coach) has been added to the board as an alternate, but was unable to attend today’s meeting due to 8U practice.
Clipper Classic Tournament:
The following age groups still have openings for the tournament:
14U – full (4 teams total) 10U – 3 spots open
13U – 3 spots open 9U – 2 spots open
12U – 4 spots open 8U – 2 spots open
11U – 2 spots open
Adam will contact the PST league to see if they turned away any teams from their tournament that we can invite to the Clipper Classic. Darci will send an email to the coaches with the number of open spots in their age group to see if they know of any teams that are looking for a tournament to play in.
Jay Robertson contacted Adam regarding teams registered for the 11U AAA bracket. There were no teams registered other than CCA Clippers 11U Blue. Adam provided Jay with two options: play in the PST tournament that weekend or play up into 12U for the Clipper Classic tournament. Jay chose to have the 11U Blue team play up to 12U for the tournament.
The mounds have been rented from Rick Smejkal at Eastern Iowa Sports in Cedar Rapids. The mounds will be dropped off on the outside of the shed on Friday at Penn Meadows Park. They will pick up the mounds on Sunday or Monday from the same location.
The club needs to rent golf carts or a gator to move mounds, equipment, etc. during the tournament. Last year the golf carts were rented at the last minute from Mount Vernon.
The Neuzil’s no longer have their trailer. Adam will contact Brian Motley with the City of North Liberty to get a quote for concession stand rental. The benefits to renting the concession stand include storage for trophies, refrigerators to store soda/water, no generator to maintain, no U-Haul to rent, no coolers to move around and fill with ice, etc. Golda will contact Darlene Smith from the Optimist Club to see if they would be interested in running the concession stand.
Darci to contact the Hy-Vee on 1st Ave. or Waterfront. Last year the meat was supplied by Hy-Vee in Coralville. We ran out of meat and Hy-Vee charged more for labor than anticipated. This year we may possibly remove brats from the menu to keep things simple (offering hot dogs, hamburgers and chicken on the menu). Concession stand items will be purchased from Costco the Friday before the tournament. Sara, Darci, and Wade all have Costco memberships. The conference track meet in Williamsburg is on Friday, May 4th and usually runs late. This will affect the Morlans and Darci as we prep for the tournament the day before. Golda will update the concession stand item spreadsheet and provide it to Darci to budget for this year. Golda will contact Kona Ice to invite them to the tournament.
Darci will set up a Sign-Up Genius for field maintenance. Lindsay Nash had set this up last year for the club. Telling the teams that field maintenance participation is required for state tournament funds seems to be an empty threat. The board will provide a list of the parents assigned to field maintenance to each of the coaches for accountability.
The City of North Liberty will rake the fields in the morning. The 1st shift of parents to help chalk, set bases, and set mounds should arrive at 6:15am on Saturday and 7am on Sunday. The first games will begin at 8am. Jonas Zimmerman does all the prep work at the fields in Tiffin. CCABC will only need to take care of field maintenance between games in Tiffin. The game times tentatively will be at 8am, 10am, noon, 2pm and 4pm.
Bret Breard will be the head of umpires for the tournament again this year. He will take care of umpire communication and organization.
Adam will contact Harry’s on the Coralville strip to purchase trophies. He would like to choose a simple design this year which will help keep costs down. There will be one bracket this year; gold bracket. There will not be MVP awards/medals. The trophies will be awarded for 1st and 2nd place in each age group.
Sign in tables will be manned by Darci and Sara in Tiffin. Golda will take care of the table in North Liberty.
Darci has the tournament binders and pitching cards. She will need to locate them. If more pitching cards need to be printed, Alphagraphics can be contacted for more. Trent DeKoter has the 14U binder.
2018 Sponsorships:
Mark Hovey now has the scholarship applications at the CCA High School. Students have the option to turn in the application to Mr. Hovey or mail them to the CCA Baseball Club P.O. Box.
Team Pictures:
All team pictures have been scheduled with KS Photography. 14U will be cancelling their team pictures.
Helmets:
Parents can drop off helmets at Premier Automotive to be painted. Premier Automotive will send an invoice to CCA Baseball Club. The board will then collect money from parents to cover the cost of helmet painting.
Niki Frese from Ironside Apparel will provide the “C” decals for the front of the helmets, but no numbers.
Pizza Ranch Fundraiser:
Darci and Adam have not heard back from Pizza Ranch regarding the funds that were raised during the CCA Baseball Club fundraiser in February. Darci will contact them to follow up.
12U Team Update:
Mitchel Smyka will be rejoining the 12U roster. After tryouts in August the family thought they would be moving from the area. Their move will now occur later than originally anticipated so Mitchell will be able to finish out the season with the team.
2nd Payments:
There are still families that need to submit their second payment to the CCA Baseball Club. Adam will send a notification to those families. If the second payment is not received, the player will be removed from the roster.
Outdoor Practices:
Jonas Zimmerman is not opening the Tiffin fields yet due to the recent snowy weather. Currently reservations for gym practices for 12U and 14U have been extended for 3 more weeks. If a team is not going to use these practice times, the club will not be charged if the teams cancel the reservations in advance. Darci will contact Brian Baxter to see if he would like to extend 13U gym practices for the 9th and 16th. Jay Robertson chose not to extend gym practices for the 11U Blue. Adam will contact Gabe Bakker to see if he would like to extend for the 10U. 11U White is currently practicing outdoors in the field.
